Kathleen Williams Clary, volunteer reading partner in San Francisco
Kathleen, a reading partner at Hillcrest Elementary School in San Francisco tutors Danny, a third grader who was significantly behind grade level.
At the beginning of the year, Danny lacked focus and confidence, and therefore didn’t enjoy reading. However, with Kathleen’s one-on-one weekly support, Danny soon began to understand the stories they read together, and he became excited about learning new words. It only took him a few months to catch up to his peers and read at grade level. Kathleen had a rewarding experience as well:
I enjoy being a Reading Partner because I believe the ‘one-on-one’ tutoring helps students to accelerate reading comprehension and literacy, and makes reading fun!
