SF mayor spends day volunteering in Baltimore to settle Super Bowl bet

Lee agreed on a friendly wager with Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake ahead of the big game in New Orleans on Feb. 3, in which the 49ers fell 34-31.As the losing mayor, Lee is visiting the winning city and started his day cooking Maryland blue crabs at Faidley’s Seafood at Lexington Market.

Rawlings-Blake is then hosting Lee in a day of service.The mayors attended a kick-off revitalization event at a vacant lot with Baltimore-based organization Power in Dirt and AmeriCorps, which is a federal community service agency.

Rawlings-Blake and Lee then headed to the city’s Western District Police Station to help paint and repair the building.Later in the afternoon, Mayors

Rawlings-Blake and Ed Lee provided one-on-one reading tutoring to students at Friendship Academy at Cherry Hill in coordination with Reading Partners, a national nonprofit literacy program and AmeriCorps national service partner.

Reading Partners is the implementing partner for Mayor Rawlings-Blake’s Third Grade Reads initiative, the goal of which is to ensure that all Baltimore students are reading at grade level by the end of third grade.

This year’s Super Bowl also pitted 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh against his older brother John, the coach of the Ravens, prompting some to call the game the “Har-bowl.”
