Wil’s Reading Partners Story

Three years ago, Wil Bruner read an article in the Sunday morning newspaper about the need for volunteer reading tutors in Tulsa. As he considered signing up with Reading Partners, a wave of nostalgia, laughter and good memories flooded over him, reminding him of when his older sister, Linda, taught him how to read. “Reading allowed my imagination to go on all kinds of adventures and learn new things,” Wil recalls. “My sister showed up for me, and shared the gift of reading. I decided it was time for me to show up for someone and share the gift of reading with them. Reading Partners is the way I can give back.” Building confidence in the students he serves is important. For Wil, the greatest gift he can receive as a tutor is watching as a big smile and proud eyes appears on the face of a student after she or he realizes that they have done well. Wil knows that all students in Reading Partners have a desire to to learn. Sometimes, it just requires a bit more attention and encouragement. According to Wil, the real connection happens when tutors show up again and again. “They come to know that I’m there for them. They reward me with smiles and thank yous.” When asked what he would say to someone who is thinking about signing up, Wil said, “It only requires an hour a week, to make a difference in a child’s life today and for each day to come. Helping someone to elevate their reading skills may be a gift of a lifetime.”
