Celebrating Literacy Impact Day

On November 10th, 2017, in conjunction with Veteran’s Day, Reading Partners Colorado combined efforts with Metro Volunteers to host our first ever Literacy Impact Day. The goal of this event was to engage a broader community in the missions of our organization, highlighting the power of volunteerism and importance of children’s literacy. On Literacy Impact Day, each one of Reading Partners Colorado’s ten partner schools had a group of tutors come in to provide make-up sessions for our students. These volunteers included some regular weekly tutors within the program, some corporate partner employees, and five wonderful veterans.

For those who were new to tutoring with Reading Partners, we began the day with a one-hour training that provided an overview of our program and curriculum. After the tutors were trained, they jumped right into tutoring their student for the day. Across our ten schools, 78 volunteers provided sessions to 82 students. It was so exciting to see our centers full of tutors and students, working together and having fun.

In addition to providing tutoring sessions, the Literacy Impact Day festivities also included goodie bags for our students. Each bag contained a new book, a bookmark, and a few other treats. Our students were so excited to receive these gifts. In addition to the 82 books that students were able to take home that day, over 280 more books were left in the reading centers for students to take home during future sessions. 39 of these books were donated by the Stanley Lake High School Pom and Dance team and 8 were donated by Tattered Cover book store.
