New Sacramento Education Collaborative awarded grant to improve educational outcomes

November 16, 2015

Together we are better. When communities come together, our students benefit. That’s why Reading Partners Sacramento is excited to be a part of the Sacramento Education Collaborative (SEC), a group of education-focused nonprofits that work together to change the education landscape in Sacramento.

By collaborating with similar education nonprofits, including City Year, College Track, Parent-Teacher Home Visit Project, Social Venture Partners, Teach for America, and WayUp Sacramento, the SEC aims to create an education safety net of high-quality tutoring, mentoring, and intervention for students in Sacramento. Through this collaboration, the SEC envisions powerful outcomes where students can develop all the skills they need to succeed in school and in life be college and career ready.

In October, the Sacramento Region Community Foundation generously awarded a $25,000 grant to the SEC to leverage the SEC’s collective resources to improve educational outcomes for underserved students in Sacramento’s Oak Park neighborhood. This grant is aligned with the Foundation’s commitment to prepare students to succeed in the new economy and expand opportunities for students in the Sacramento region so that they are college and career ready. Currently in its planning and development phase, this support is critical for the SEC. Partner organizations meet twice a month to develop a strategic plan to share resources, build public awareness, and measure the success of students who engage with one or more of the partner organizations.

The SEC was recognized by the Sacramento Kings Foundation for its work with students who live in or attend school in Oak Park. Education is one of the Foundation’s impact priorities, which is why the SEC has been selected to take center stage during an upcoming Kings basketball game.

With balloons, dancers, and royal fanfare, the Kings Foundation and cheerleaders surprised students and tutors in the reading center at Ethel Phillips Elementary School to share the good news. Game details will be available soon!

Although the collaboration has just begun, together the SEC is making a difference for Sacramento children, by working together to create a continuum of support for children from the time they enter public schools until they graduate from college. And Reading Partners is thrilled to be part of the SEC, making a meaningful difference for students.
