CHRIS LEWIS-HARRIS AND THE SKRINEWAY TEAM VISIT READING PARTNERS AT PS 123 IN HARLEM
New York, NY — January 26, 2018
Reading Partners was thrilled to host former NFL player Chris Lewis-Harris and the SkrineWay Team at its reading center at PS 123 Mahalia Jackson, a Title I elementary school located in central Harlem. The team came bearing toy donations for the students. Their visit coincides with National Mentoring Month, which celebrates the power of mentoring relationships and calls for more people to play a supportive role in the lives of children.
“It was fun to visit PS 123 and meet with the school leaders and the team from Reading Partners,” said Chris Lewis-Harris. “We were thrilled to be able to donate over 50 toys to the school store and see Reading Partners and their volunteers in action. We look forward to going back soon to tutor with this amazing organization.”
Reading Partners is a proven, national nonprofit that mobilizes community volunteers to work one-on-one with struggling readers. Volunteers utilize an easy-to-follow, individualized lesson plan each week in order to meet students at their level and help them make the critical transition from learning to read to reading to learn. This year, the program in New York City plans to serve 1,070 students across 19 high-need school sites throughout the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens.
“We are so excited that the SkrineWay Team was able to come in person to learn about the program and meet some of our students,” said Maris Goodstein, executive director of Reading Partners New York. “This is what Reading Partners is all about: getting individuals in the community directly into schools to provide support for kids. Their generous donations of toys were icing on the cake!”
