READING PARTNERS GIVES SUMMER READING PACKS TO NEARLY 800 SILICON VALLEY STUDENTS
The nonprofit literacy program aims to decrease summer learning loss by building students’ at-home libraries

Milpitas, CA — May 17, 2018

Reading Partners is ensuring that nearly 800 students will take home Summer Reading Packs this week throughout San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. Over 80 percent of children from low-income communities experience a “summer slide” – the loss of reading skills while they are out on summer break. This year Reading Partners Silicon Valley launched its “For the Love of Reading All Summer Long” campaign with the goal of continuing students’ literacy success throughout the summer.

Research shows that one of the best ways to combat summer learning loss is to provide students with access to books and other reading resources in the summer. Each pack contains five age- and skill-appropriate books, five corresponding activity sheets, a summer reading journal, a summer reading chart bookmark, and a pencil.

“Our students have worked really hard all year to make gains in their literacy skills,” said Aarika Riddle, Executive Director of Reading Partners Silicon Valley. “We hope that by providing them with the tools they need to keep reading while school is out, we can minimize the effects of summer slide and help them return in August as confident readers.”

Reading Partners is a national nonprofit that collaborates with community volunteers and local public schools in Silicon Valley and in 13 other regions across the country to equip students with the foundational skills they need to be able to read at grade level by fourth grade.

Students at San Miguel Elementary School look through their new Summer Reading Packs (designed to decrease summer learning loss) in Sunnyvale on Wednesday, May 16.
