CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) –

For many people, reading a book is something we take for granted. For others, reading does not come easy.

Currently, four out of five fourth graders from low-income families in South Carolina cannot read at grade level.

Thankfully, there is help.  For the past three years, Reading Partners has been placing volunteers in low-income schools to help children master basic reading skills.

The results are amazing.

More than 700 students in Charleston have been helped and 77 percent have increased their rates of learning literacy.

Reading held a special place in the heart of Cynthia Graham Hurd.  A librarian for 31 years, she was one of the nine victims of the senseless act at Mother Emanuel AME Church.

Live 5 News is partnering with the Cynthia Graham Hurd Foundation for Literacy and Civic Engagement on a book drive in Cynthia’s honor this June.

Even in death, Cynthia is still teaching, and helping our children become strong readers and lifelong learners.

During the month of June, please donate a new or gently used children’s book to a library and Reading Partners will make sure it gets into the hands of a young reader.

I hope you will join me in supporting the foundation and the children of Charleston.
